Once Upon a Dream...
EDITORIAL DESIGN | PHOTOGRAPHY & POST PROCESSING | PRODUCTION DESIGN
THE BRIEF
What are your dreams telling you?
If you ask a scientist or psychologist, they’ll tell you it can easily be boiled down to scientific facts: Dreams are reflection of your recent experiences, future possibilities, or your state of mind.
If it is a science – why do some dreams contain such otherworldly experiences, like flying, travelling through time, and your teeth falling out?
The intimate juxtaposition between science and magic, real and unreal, reality and dreams – as polarizing as the two concepts are, they’re just as tightly woven together.
The following project: “Once Upon a Dream…” was inspired by just this, the strange science of Dreams.
Taking it’s form as an Editorial Design project, the work aims to make you question – what do your dreams really mean?
Theme + Graphic Moodboard
Type + Layout Moodboard
THE INSPIRATION
Starting off with extensive research – a mood-board was developed after sufficient information had been sourced on the subject matter.
One of the important goals for this project was to maintain the look and feel of a dreamscape, to accurately portray the final message.
An additional mood-board was developed, to illustrate the direction the layout, as well as the typography was heading towards.
Continuing with the theme of juxtaposition – the contrast of a bold serif font was paired with a flowing, hand-lettered inspired script font.
At first, the project had a strong influence on keeping the photos the primary focus – but the addition of text served well in rounding out the project, and making it feel complete.
THE FINAL PROJECT
Once the ground work was properly laid, the project was finally conceived. Beginning with a series of self portraits, the main figure aims to portray a dream-like fairy, looking at once welcoming and mysterious.
The photographs were then manipulated and further processed to accurately portray the dreamlike aesthetic which was being sought after throughout the entire project.
Lastly – the biggest piece of the project – was creating a print piece, a multi-page art book, titled “Once Upon a Dream…”.
The book contains useful (as well as useless) information on dreams, song lyrics, nonsensical ramblings, and interesting facts regarding the dream cycle found through research.
Although this project began as an interesting and somewhat scientific realization, it found it’s final form in a very artistic, and otherworldly realm.
