RuPaul: The Essentials

THE BRIEF

As RuPaul – the Supermodel of the World famously once said: “We’re all born naked – and the rest is Drag.”

This statement, simply translated, means believing in yourself is only half the battle – the dress-up we humans partake in every single day is what truly makes us become ourselves.

What lies on the cover can sometimes clearly and perfectly illustrate what lies inside.

Other times, it can be two completely different worlds. 

Inspired by RuPaul, specifically their the musical creations, the objective of this creative design project, was to successfully design CD covers for RuPaul’s latest albums – collections of the Essentials.

The new design was aimed to imagine RuPaul’s signature blend of glamour, humour, and complete empowerment – while consistently modernizing the aesthetic to appeal to both long-time fans and new listeners.

THE FINAL PROJECT

Starting off with extensive research – a mood-board was developed after sufficient information had been sourced on the subject matter.

One of the important goals for this project was to maintain the look and feel of a dreamscape, to accurately portray the final message.

An additional mood-board was developed, to illustrate the direction the layout, as well as the typography was heading towards.

Continuing with the theme of juxtaposition – the contrast of a bold serif font was paired with a flowing, hand-lettered inspired script font.

At first, the project had a strong influence on keeping the photos the primary focus – but the addition of text served well in rounding out the project, and making it feel complete.
